"The only constant in life is change"

Dragonflies represent spiritual growth through change and transformation.

When you hear the word ‘change’ how does it make you feel?

Excited? Nervous? a little sick? or do you dive back under the duvet until the nasty person stops saying that word?

When we look at nature, we stare in wonder how the day changes to night, how Spring changes to Summer, how the leaves on trees change colour and how a caterpillar changes to become a butterfly.

Yet, when it comes to us the word ‘change’ becomes dark and scary. Why?

Here’s what I think.

Firstly, it’s fear of the unknown, the dreaded place called uncertainty how many times have you said “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t”

Uh! been there, done that, and let me tell you being in Groundhog Day is a crappy place to be.

Secondly, it’s a routine shifter, I love a good routine, I thrive on the structure but too much of it gets boring. We become boring.

Lastly, its lack of control and this is the main culprit of why most people don’t like change.

Fun fact: it’s common for toddlers to withhold their poop, as an act of ‘power play’ - being in control starts early.

So what happens when life throws you a curveball and change is forced upon you?

Let’s say something like a mysterious infectious disease hits the whole of Planet Earth, leaving supermarket shelves bare, people fighting over toilet rolls, schools shutting down, thousands of people losing their jobs, and hundreds of thousands of people dying.

I know its extreme but… work with me

Do you stop! Stay home, sit on the sofa all day exhausting everything Netflix has to offer while eating everything the kids leave and getting the most entertainment out of plaiting your hair on your legs.? While repeating “this is awful, there’s nothing I can do”

Or

Do you stand up take change by the hand and say “let’s do this”?

Now more than ever is the time to make plans, dream BIG and become a doer

The thing is it’s a common misconception that when change happens we are out of control, and that’s just not the case, yes the unknown can be a little scary but it can also be really exciting. The routine and structure may get thrown out of the window but everyone knows the best parties are the unplanned ones.

We never actually lose control we just have to change (there’s that word again) our perception of it.

We're in control of our thoughts, our actions, our words every second of the day– ultimately all these things add up to us being in control of our lives.

Change is an opportunity to grow, learn and experience new things. Embrace it.

I’ll leave you with the Serenity Prayer:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; the courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.

Love & light
