Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do

As you know, one of my goals in life is to be able to do at 102 what I can do today, and more and one of the ways that will help me achieve this is by moving my body energetically daily.

Longevity is one of the benefits of exercise, The additional health benefits are a healthy weight, healthy bones, muscles, and joints, psychological well-being, and a lower risk of certain cancers and heart disease.

I would like to share my three steps to creating a movement habit.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE: Creating a toolbox of activities that you enjoy is key to your success. List all of the activities that you love doing, remove limitations do what makes your heart smile. If you do not like going to the gym, forcing yourself to go will not set you up for success. Hula Hoop, Skipping, Swimming, Jogging, Weights, Dancing in the Kitchen, Climbing trees.... the list has endless potential.

A top tip that I use with my clients is to create a toolbox: . Grab multi-coloured PostIt notes and a pen - Pink = 10 mins, Blue 15 mins, Green - 20 mins, Orange - 25 mins, Yellow - 30 mins. Then write down exercises that you enjoy that can be done in that timeframe.

This is because life throws curve balls, and sometimes it's just good to mix it up a little.

BE CONSISTENTLY CONSISTENT: Focus on building the habit, not the result. Small steps create big changes. Making a habit of giving yourself time is the first step; in that time, enjoy what you are doing, be in the moment, and visualise the goodness flowing through you.

PLAN, PREPARE, PRAISE: We are more successful at everything when we plan and prepare. Set yourself up for success. Make a note in your diary as to when you are exercising. Set a time and the time spent after, showering etc. Have your workout clothes and any equipment ready, so you are not wasting time hunting for everything.

A top tip is to plan to exercise in the morning - making it part of your morning routine - if life then throws a curve ball and the day takes a different turn, you will have already completed your moves for the day. Success!!

Praise yourself for what you've achieved - Giving yourself praise and reward for successfully completing anything that we set, helps to establish a habit. That could be a gorgeous healthy smoothie, or it could be a weekly massage - let the reward be good for you.

Look in the mirror and tell yourself how proud you are that you are creating positive, healthy habits.

“Exercise is a celebration of what your body can do, not a punishment for what you ate”
